The OTON is a video game console that is currently being developed by EnGeniux, a newly formed company spearheaded by Derrick Samuels. The project, internally known as the Genesis Project and codenamed "EVO Touch", was first started in in 2010 and is currently in the fund raising phase, with a goal of $1 million USD required to finance the remaining steps to bring this system to market. The official prototype is scheduled to be released in February or March of 2013. | |
The hardware is powered by a Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9, sports 2 GB of RAM with 16 GB of internal Flash Storage. Ports include
three USB 2.0 (2 standard, 1 micro), two SD Card slots and stereo analog and
multi-channel digital (SPDIF). The OTON supports both a standard Ethernet connection as well as and WiFi 802.11
a\b\g\n. An optional rear laser projection camera enables content to be displayed on virtually any flat surface.
For those wanting to hook it up to their HDTV, an HDMI 1.3 connection is standard. A front facing camera is included for voice
and motion recognition (ala Microsoft Kinect). The OTON does not have an optical drive for
game media - all content is streamed, downloaded or internally created. The key selling point for this console is the ability to generate games on the fly with minimal interaction from the user. The details at this point are limited, but the OTON is reportedly able to accomplish this through the OTON Creation Automation Engine, a software program embedded within the modified Ubuntu OS named Otonomous. From what I am able to gather, the program seems to create its own games using parameters, objects and basic instructions as set by the basement game developer. The official release also states that OTON X (Otonomous Operating System) will be able to modify classics and other content, like adding additional levels to a title. This is a very ambitious undertaking to say the least. The console also supports Linux and Android software, providing an open environment for game developers. See the Other Media tab for videos of the prototype in action. |

Some may call this an overly adventurous project, but this is not foreign territory for the developers.
You may be familiar with Mr. Samuels through his work with Envizions and the EVO Smart Console, the first Linux-based video game
console. The goal of that system, and its successors the EVO 2 and EVO 2 DX, was to allow the gamer to experience the many Linux
and Android based games and applications, normally reserved for the PC or handheld devices, on the big screen television.
Many of the contributing members for those projects have been retained to work on the OTON. We will keep a close eye on the progress of the OTON and will update this page accordingly. |
